Bio:
Luke Harrald is an experimental composer, software developer and installationist from Adelaide, South Australia.
Luke's work focuses predominantly on generative computer music, utilising a variety of media including acoustic instruments (up to full orchestra), electronics and video. He is particularly interested in interdisciplinary work, mostly creating music based on cutting edge computer science. Well known for his work with Game Theory, Luke's live electronics work aims to embody some aspects of improvised music performance in interactive computer systems. Recently he has been applying aspects from this work to create innovative public art installations.
An active campaigner for contemporary music, Luke has been involved in numerous performances of his work both nationally, and internationally, and received radio airplay on Radio Adelaide, SBS Radio Alchemy, and performed ‘live to air’ on ABC Classic FM.
From 1995 to 2000, Luke was a member of ACME New Music Company, premiering over 40 of his own works. In recent years, Luke has been an important contributor of the Adelaide experimental music scene, performing for the Tyndall Assembly, COMA, Music of Transparent Means and his ad hoc collectives Hidden City and MINIMAX.
Recently, Luke was part of a creative team commissioned to create a permanent immersive installation in an abandoned mine in the northern Flinders Ranges for Tourism SA. Other commissions include a critically acclaimed work ‘EndGame’ for the Zephyr String Quartet’s Electro-acoustic Project, ‘The Imaginary Menagery’, a large scale inter-media work for the opening of the Adelaide Festival of Arts (that attracted an audience of over 1000), the Sight Specific Music Concert series at the Greenaway Art Gallery, and installations as part of the 'Project' series.
Luke is currently active as a composer, performer and lecturer in Music Technology at the University of Adelaide.
